Yeast infections are caused by an overgrowth of the normal yeast that lives in the vagina. This overgrowth is usually triggered by a decrease in naturally occurring bacteria, as well as changes in diet or other factors. Yeast infections can show up as redness and vaginal itchiness, as well as pain when urinating for women, and inflammation of the lining of the penis for men.
